Storage Tips

Before Storing

It is very important to ensure all your items are clean and dry before putting them into storage. Damp furniture, boxes and  clothing can attract mold and mildew. Items made of wood or metal can rot or rust if place in the storage unit while damp or wet. It is important to know that moisture can migrate to other items inside your unit.

How To Pack

If you are using boxes, make sure they are clean. And know that cardboard boxes may not be the best option for storing your items.  If you are storing books or art, consider using acid-free, breathable boxes.  When storing clothing, consider using vacuum-sealed bags instead of boxes.

Use Desiccants

Desiccators, such as silica gel packets, may help with residual moisture. Consider adding a few packets to your containers to help absorb moisture. Be sure to check the desiccator's expiration date and replace them when necessary.  You can also try putting a bag of regular kitty litter or moisture absorbing containers in your unit.

Airflow is Important

Airflow is not only important when packing items in containers, but also when packing items into your unit. Avoid storing items directly on the concrete or metal floor.  Don't stack your boxes and containers against exterior walls. Leave room between your stacked items and allow for airspace around furniture and other objects.  Proper airflow is key to creating a mold-free environment.

Our units are not climate-controlled. So if you are looking to store precious heirlooms or antiques, consider a climate-controlled facility.
